Building the Future: Empowering Women in Construction

On Wednesday, March 8th, we had a live conversation with a panel of talented women who shared their personal journey of overcoming barriers, how they've seen the industry change, and what leadership opportunities look like for women in construction today. If you missed this one, you missed a good one so here's a link to the webinar recording. Below you'll find a sampling of some of the great advice that was shared during this webcast. Be sure to listen to the recording to hear more amazing tips! And here is just one comment we received from an attendee: I would like to sincerely thank all the wonderful and intelligent women that took their time and knowledge to present today, it was a very good learning experience, expanding my perspective. Thank you! Take a moment to reply with your own advice! Here are a few examples of great advice that was shared during the webinar by the panelists: How do I appear more confident during meetings? Start small, making comments and asking questions that show them you're engaged. Don't take notes or offer to the notetaker! For women just entering the construction workforce, be sure to show them a career path, starting at the interview. We need to dispel the notion that women work because they want to get out of the house or provide extra income. Women want careers and we need to show them the way! Be a helpful person/team player but don't let others put work on you just because they think you're an "office worker". If they come to you needing help but what they really want is for you to do the task for them, DON'T. Give them instructions but let them do it for themselves.

Being confident. Not letting certain individuals put you down or make you feel inferior. Strive forward. Balance the work life.

Focusing on individual qualities is key. Avoid generalizing or stereotyping anyone. Treat each person as an individual with their unique strengths, weaknesses, and perspectives.

It is important to work as a team and not be afraid to give feedback while also being able to take feedback. Learn and grow as a team.

I am a newer accountant and appreciated learning from other women in the industry. I appreciated the reminder that we should look out for other women and make sure we are encouraging them to develop and grow in their skills. As women we can be confident in our roles and know that we were hired for a reason, don't doubt your skills and what you bring to the table – especially different perspectives!

Participating in and supporting local programs for women in construction goes a long way in promoting this effort. Engaging the next generation early will make a big difference. The Trades are returning to schools to emphasize options for careers and women need to be a focus to tap this resource.

Stand strong in knowing your job responsibilities and don't allow yourself to be treated as a secretary just because you are a female.
